Now Featuring: Online Music Licensing
The target buyer for MPL Music Publishing's new One Stop music library is the music supervisor who is generally looking for quality music to incorporate into a project. Traditionally the music supervisor's search for the right track is slowed down because deals have to be negotiated with two different entities for one use, the master rights holder and the publisher. MPL's One Stop shopping for both publishing rights and master rights makes licensing music easy and affordable. Synchronization licensing for One Stop material can be easily secured directly from MPL's website and conveniently paid for by major credit card.
Additionally, the One Stop tracks will serve the smaller user; student films, personal websites, etc. MPL gets many requests from individuals who want to license music legally, but have very limited budgets. Being able to direct them to the One Stop music library will free up our licensing agents to work on more complicated transactions.
Recently web sites have been launched that feature "One Stop shopping" for tracks available for license. These sites are populated with material that is uploaded directly from artists who control their own rights. Although the website administrators then categorize the music to optimize search functions, there is little or no attention paid to quality. Consequently, the music supervisor has to sift through literally thousands of tracks to find what he needs. MPL has taken the opportunity to add online licensing functions to its already easy to use website. With MPL's customized search engine, finding the right song is simple and straightforward.
As more independent music artists take responsibility for handling their work, the pool of people who have quality music that's underrepresented has grown. Through contacts and through research, a number of unsigned music acts have submitted their material for inclusion in MPL's online music library.
If the material is of a certain standard, a simple non-exclusive agreement to represent the artist for synch rights is signed with MPL. In seeking tracks for the site, the needs of a music supervisor are paramount and although the material is largely song oriented, there is a significant sampling of instrumental work and film cues. Rather than aiming for a mainstream "hit" sound, there is room here, even a preference for, artists with an alternative sound. As a result, MPL has accumulated a large group of tracks that cover many styles and genres. The common denominator is quality.
As more tracks were submitted, there were some wonderful surprises. MPL will be representing an album by Edie Brickell with Harper Simon and another by the legendary slide guitar player Sonny Landreth that features Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Buffet and Vince Gill. On the other end of the scale, there's even an album of Peruvian music influenced by Jimi Hendrix! At MPL, you’ll find a terrific array of One Stop material, all ready and geared to be quickly and effortlessly licensed for placement in your Advertisement, Film, TV, Website or Video project.
